NY Post: Bush-Jeter Bid for MLB's Marlins Might Fall Short

Former Gov. Jeb Bush, R-Fla., and retired New York Yankee Derek Jeter might soon be outbid in their attempt to buy the Miami Marlins.

According to the New York Post, Charles Dean Metropoulos — whose company owns Hostess Brands, which produces Twinkies — is interested in buying the Major League Baseball franchise.

Forbes pegs Metropoulos' net worth at $2.5 billion. The Post reports the Greek businessman and investor has approached Bush about putting in a joint bid, but Bush is already working with Jeter.

Bush and Jeter, the Post reported, have been recruiting co-investors for their bid that reportedly exceeds $1 billion. Given Metropoulos' business portfolio, he might be able to outbid them without any partners.

"I think it's bad news for Bush and Jeter," a sports banker told the Post.

According to the Miami Herald, Bush and Jeter have offered $1.3 billion for the team — an offer that was eclipsed by another player in the bidding war, a group led by Tagg Romney. Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not part of his son's group to buy the team, the Herald reported.
