After the Charlie Hebdo massacre in January 2015, the Paris attacks in November, and now the terror attack in Nice that left over 80 dead, CNBC reports that France — a nation long considered a beacon of liberty and stability — may not only be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but rather something that resembles civil war.

"I wish I could say this was just hysterical exaggeration," Jonathan Miller, elected city councilor in Southern France wrote in an op-ed for CNBC. "But the evidence does not support complacency," he added.

Backing up his claim, Miller noted that memberships at a local gun club just on the outskirts of Montpellier has quadrupled — and not because of their love for the sport.

"They're getting ready for war," Benoit, a local farmer, told Miller.

In France, Miller writes that the people are losing confidence in the honesty of government and in its basic competence to solve problems.

According to Newsmax blogger Peter Pry, even France's Patrick Calvar, Director of DGSI (Homeland Security), has warned repeatedly, including on July 12: "One or two more terrorist attacks and we may well see a civil war."

Despite a country in mourning and fear, Marine Le Pen, leader of the anti-immigrant National Front admitted that nothing has yet been done to fight back, saying, "The war against Islamic fundamentalism has not yet begun."

"Now it is necessary to urgently declare it," she added.

According to Miller, "traditional politicians are failing France's citizens. The president, Francois Hollande, has so far responded feebly to this."

In addition, Miller noted that "neither Hollande nor his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, have done anything substantial to address the chronic unemployment of young French Muslims, said to be over 50 percent; nothing to reprimand right-wing mayors who refuse to offer alternatives to pork in school cafeterias; nothing to curb the casual racism shown to young people of North African origin by the overwhelmingly white police. Indeed, they have made it worse, even forbidding Muslim women from wearing head scarves in public."

Miller writes that the mood in France is turning to "anger" and could ignite a civil war.
