In a heartfelt letter to the public on Sunday, former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco asked for prayers after she revealed that she was fighting cancer for which there is no cure, The Advocate reported.

Blanco was first diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2011, and the cancer has now spread to her liver.

"I am in a fight for my own life, one that will be difficult to win, battling the melanoma that has invaded my liver," she wrote. "I knew from the start of my cancer journey this could happen, but with each passing year, I hoped this cup would pass me by. It did not."

Explaining, "No treatments have yet been identified to actually cure this type of melanoma, so a variety of treatments will likely be necessary over time," Blanco wrote in her letter that "I would deeply appreciate, if you should see fit, that you offer prayers on behalf of myself, as well as all others fighting to survive life-threatening illnesses."

She also expressed gratitude for the blessings in her life, such as a large and caring family and friends, as well as for public support when she faced previous challenges, such as the death of her son.

Blanco had a long political career in Louisiana that began with her term in the state's House of Representatives starting in 1984, her service on the Public Service Commission and as lieutenant governor and then her time as governor from 2004 to 2008, according to nola.com.

She was the first woman in Louisiana to lead the Public Service Commission and was also the first female elected governor in the state.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit Louisiana in 2005, not long after she became governor.

In the aftermath of the storms, Blanco, a Democrat, fought publicly with the administration of Republican President George W. Bush for months in attempt to help her state rebuild and was criticized for being ineffectual.
