Florida Veteran Building Mercenary Force to Fight ISIS

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Mar 2015 11:16 PM

A Florida veteran has decided to take matters into his own hands and is recruiting other military veterans to fight the Islamic State (ISIS).

According to a WTLV report, Sean Rowe — who served in the military for eight years and now lives in Jacksonville, Fla. — is recruiting via a website he launched, Veterans Against ISIS.

Rowe said he's received a lot of support and interest in his idea.

"There has been strong support and numerous veterans who are interested in going," Rowe told WTLV. "So, I will be talking with them and screening them. I want to keep it small and simple."

Rowe wants to bring a force of men who would essentially be acting as mercenaries to the Middle East, where they would "take the fight to [ISIS]."

There are no federal laws that prohibit someone from doing that, according to the report, but a person or persons acting as mercenaries would not be protected under the terms of the Geneva Convention. And if they are injured on the battlefield, there's no guarantee a hospital would treat them.

Also, a former FBI agent pointed out in the WTLV report that training for something like this would most likely involve the use of automatic weapons and explosives, which could violate state and local laws.

The top general at U.S. Central Command, meanwhile, told a House committee Tuesday that U.S. airstrikes have killed more than 8,500 ISIS fighters since last summer.

"We're about where we said we would be," Gen. Lloyd Austin told the House Armed Services Committee. "[The offensive] has killed more than 8,500 ISIL fighters.

"Make no mistake, ISIL is losing this fight. He will be defeated. He will be defeated."

ISIS has also taken its fight to Iraq's museums, where members of the terror group destroyed ancient artifacts last month.
