The upcoming report on the use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act during the 2016 presidential campaign could prove useful for President Donald Trump in his ongoing impeachment inquiry, Fox News reports.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz is expected to release his report Dec. 9 before testifying about it before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told Fox News' Sean Hannity last Wednesday.

Trump hailed the report as "historic," in a recent interview with Fox News. Sources for The Washington Post report that Horowitz has concluded that the FISA warrants were justifiable despite reportedly finding that a former FBI lawyer allegedly manipulated a document related to the surveillance.

A House Republican source told Fox News this week the president will likely use the report to accuse Democrats of unfairly targeting him.

"It will be damning evidence that government officials really were trying to sabotage Trump, which is what he's been saying all along, including during the impeachment debate," the source said.

"It'll make it easy for Trump to portray impeachment as yet another political hit job by the  resistance meant to undermine him and oust him — which of course it is," they added.
