Man Who Shot Video: SC Cop 'Made a Bad Decision,' Must Pay

Feidin Santana, the man who shot the video of the South Carolina police officer who fatally shot a man in the back on Saturday, said the officer made a bad decision and will have to pay for it.

North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer Michael Slager was charged with murder on Tuesday after Santana's video was made public. It appears to show Slager shooting a fleeing Walter Scott after a traffic stop.

Santana talked with "NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt on Wednesday, saying that he can't feel happy about the officer being charged with murder and fired from his job, but that he turned the video over to Scott's family because he wanted the family to get justice.

Story continues below video.

Slager "made a bad decision, and you pay for your decisions in this life," Santana said. "And Mr. Scott didn't deserve it. There are other ways that can be used to get him arrested, and that wasn't the proper way to do that."

Santana said he was walking to his job on Saturday when he saw a scuffle between the two men. The officer had the situation under control and had used his Taser on Scott, he said.

"He had control of Scott, and Scott was trying to get away from the Taser," Santana said. "Like I say, he never used the Taser again."

In the video, Slager shoots at Scott eight times as Scott flees.

"As you can see in the video, the police officer shoots him in the back," Santana said. "I knew right away I had something in my hands."

Slager said he shot Scott after Scott tried to grab his Taser. The video does not show that happening, but it does show Slager drop something beside Scott's body after shooting and handcuffing him.

Slager was fired on Tuesday.

Scott's brother, Anthony Scott, told Time on Wednesday that Santana told the family he held the video initially to see if the police department would release the true account of events.

"When they continued with the lies, he said, 'I have to come forward,'" Anthony Scott said.
