The FBI has opened its new Milwaukee headquarters in a sprawling complex overlooking Lake Michigan and dedicated it to the memory of a special agent murdered by notorious gangster "Baby Face" Nelson 82 years ago.

"This and [our FBI office in] Tampa are now tied for the best views," FBI Director James Comey said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The new space — once occupied by the global financial firm of Stark Investments, was christened on Wednesday — after a $45 million renovation and will house about 200 agency workers.

The FBI moved from its longtime location in downtown Milwaukee to comply with its updated security specifications, enacted after the Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11 attacks.

It features anti-terror defense measures including state-of-the-art electronic surveillance, anti-ram barriers and a security fence.

The building is named in tribute to Special Agent W. Carter Baum who was ambushed and killed in 1934 by infamous gangster and bank robber Lester J. Gillis, better known as "Baby Face" Nelson.

Baum is the only FBI agent ever to die in the line of duty in Wisconsin. That same year, Nelson, who was affiliated with John Dillinger's bloodthirsty gang of thugs, died from wounds in a gun battle with the FBI, during which two other agents were slain.

Comey said the new headquarters will add a healthy balance to the stress-filled lives of FBI agents, Wisconsin Public Radio reports.

"A physical space like this makes that possible in a way that other spaces simply don't," Comey said.

"Running trails, walking trails, biking trails, the ability to go outside and simply stare at water, and think to yourself, is priceless."
