Amid a roiling controversy over the expected release by President Donald Trump of a GOP memo critical of the FBI, a group representing agents Thursday gave their full-throated support to bureau Director Christopher Wray.

"The FBI Agents Association appreciates FBI Director Chris Wray standing shoulder to shoulder with the men and women of the FBI as we work together to protect our country from criminal and national security threats," the association declared in a statement.

The FBI issued a rare public statement Wednesday saying it had "grave concerns" about the memo written by House Intelligence Committee member Rep. David Nunes, R-Calif., and that some information in the document was inaccurate.

CNN reported Wray feels his advice on the memo is being ignored, with some White House officials concerned he could quit if the document is made public — a decision that rests in Trump's hands.

The president has made it no secret of his unhappiness with the investigation of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election — with much of that anger now focused on FBI Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of the matter.
