The independent board that makes content moderation decisions on Facebook will likely gain more control on what content is allowed on the social media site, reports Politico.

Thomas Hughes, administrative director of the independent board, told the news outlet that Facebook “has clearly flagged that they intend to increase the board's powers, and the board fully intends to take those powers,” adding that the changes will come "within the next few months."

"They've flagged that this is coming, we're actively building it," he said. "There are multiple other types of pieces of content, like suspensions of accounts and things like that which are coming."

The Oversight Board, which can only review content that has already been taken down from Facebook, will also be given the power to adjudicate on accounts suspended for breaching the company’s community standards.

Former President Donald Trump earlier this week received a “user statement” for the case it is deciding about whether Facebook was right to indefinitely suspend him from his Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The board has received about 9,000 comments from the public on the issue of whether Trump should be allowed to regain access to his accounts. Facebook in January announced that it had asked the Oversight Board to review its decision to suspend Trump on Jan. 7, a day after rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

Facebook’s Oversight Board, which launched last year, reviews the toughest calls the company makes.

It has 90 days to make a decision, which is binding and cannot be overruled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg or any other Facebook executive.
