An overwhelming majority of voters want Facebook hold itself to the same standards as other media companies — and keep fake news off the social media platform, a new poll found.

In the survey commissioned by the Factual Democracy Project, and conducted by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, 73 percent of voters said Facebook should not allow foreign powers to run ads targeting Americans during an election, The Seattle Times reported.

The poll also found 78 percent said they want Facebook to prevent inaccurate stories from being widely shared on its platform.

"Their consumers, at least in this poll, think of them as a media company," Melissa Ryan, founder of Factual Democracy Project, told the Times. "And they want them to keep fake news off the platform."

According to Ryan, 73 percent of voters think "Facebook should hold itself to the same standard as other media companies to only publish accurate stories about candidates during election season."

The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

In other findings, the Times reported the survey found:

  • 37 percent of voters had a favorable view of Facebook, compared with 36 percent who did not; 27 percent did not have a view of the company.
  • 29 percent of President Donald Trump voters had a positive view of Facebook; 49 percent did not.
  • 44 percent of Hillary Clinton voters had a favorable view of the company.

The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
