Facebook became one of the most successful companies in the world because it follows many of the same "ideas, values, and principles" that conservatives advance, making its push to censor conservative news "disturbing and difficult to understand," Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint believes.

"We on the right often wonder why anyone at Facebook or other successful companies would support leftist political interests that want to destroy these free market principles," including "freedom of speech, entrepreneurship, free markets, individual choice, freedom of association, protection of property and intellectual rights and limited interference by government," DeMint writes in a Saturday opinion piece for The Daily Signal.

DeMint was one of several conservative media representatives meeting with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday, after reports surfaced that the nation's top social media site allegedly suppressed conservative-leaning news stories in its "Trending Topics" sections.

In his column, DeMint said he opted to meet with Zuckerberg because "freedom is now under attack in America by big government, big corporations, big government unions, and big liberal media," and the only hope to save such freedom may be through the "uncontrolled distribution of information to individuals through platforms like Facebook."

"If the Internet goes the way of liberal broadcast and cable media, schools and universities, and Hollywood, our democracy will replaced by speech codes, cries of "hate speech!" for speaking against the prevailing liberal wisdom, and lack of real public debate," DeMint wrote.

In addition, this election season has made Americans cynical about the government, and there is "clearly political upheaval underway," caused in part through people getting information faster through the Internet.

In the past, news on political debate was controlled by a few powerful newspapers or television networks, meaning politicians could build alliances with editors and control the information being released.

"The Internet, with its hundreds of media outlets, blogs, and social platforms, has completely changed the way news is shared and consumed, pulling back the curtain on secrets Washington had long protected," said DeMint.

Facebook promises to provide an "unbiased and unfiltered platform," said DeMint, but with former employees claiming the company was censoring and blocking information, it confirmed complaints from some who said they had faced bias from the website over the years.
