In order to keep Great Britain safe from rogue regimes intent on "perpetual confrontation" with the U.K., MI6 Chief Alex Younger is calling for a new era of spying, The Telegraph has reported.

Britain must enter an age of "fourth generation espionage" to keep the country secure, which Younger describes as the use of artificial intelligence and robotics against these rogue states.

Younger is meant to explain these ideas in an address Monday at St Andrew's University, only the second time in his four years on the job that he has made a public speech.

Younger is warning about the danger of adversaries who are "willing to take advantage" of significant advancement in cyber technology to attack Britain "in ways that fall short of traditional warfare," singling out Russia for its "malign behavior."

The MI6 chief urged "Russia or any other state intent on subverting our way of life not to underestimate our determination and our capabilities, or those of our allies."

He pointed out as an example the combined response to Russia's assassination attempt of Sergei Skripal. Russia used nerve agent smeared on his front door handle in Salisbury, but countermeasures led to the dismantling of Russian spy networks in several countries.

Younger said this emphasizes the importance of bolstering Britain's security ties with European allies ahead of Brexit, pointing out multiple Islamic State-inspired attacks in Europe have been disrupted due to such cooperation.

Future cooperation would be in doubt with a no-deal Brexit, British Security Minister Ben Wallace has warned, according to the Independent.

This "would have a real impact on [the UK's] ability to work with European partners to protect the public," he said.
