Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., will accept donations made in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to his presidential campaign, Coindesk reports.

Blockchain firm The White Company, which is providing the Swalwell campaign with the technology to process the donations, made the announcement on Thursday.

“Eric is running for President to end gun violence, solve the student debt crisis, and make sure Government serves the people. He supports blockchain technology and the use of cryptocurrency to empower the people,” the company wrote on a dedicated page for the candidate.

"He can't do it alone and needs your help. Help Eric run,” it says above a donation form.

The White Company founder Elizabeth White added, “By enabling crypto donations, Swalwell not only makes it easier for [public] to support his campaign but also shows how he values the democratization of financial services to everyone, not just the wealthy.”

The congressman is the second Democratic presidential candidate to accept cryptocurrency, after Andrew Yang, a strong supporter of crypto-assets who hopes to “create clear guidelines in the digital asset world so that businesses and individuals can invest and innovate in the area without fear of a regulatory shift.”

Swalwell has said in the past that “Blockchain can change the world, if we let it,” according to Coindesk.

“So much of our public life now exists online, and there’s no reason to believe we can’t extend this further into our democracy and our economy – from exercising our right to vote, to how we look at cryptocurrency.”
