Former Vice President Joe Biden has a strong advantage over his rival candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to the latest survey from Emerson Polling.

The poll found that Biden has about twice as much support as Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Kamala Harris, D-Calif., despite overall support for the former vice president dropping slightly since June.

  • Biden: 30 percent
  • Sanders: 15 percent
  • Warren: 15 percent
  • Harris: 15 percent
  • South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg: 5 percent

In June, Biden polled at 34 percent, but held a much smaller advantage over Sanders, who was polling at 27 percent.

Most, 60 percent, said in the July poll that they are not completely decided on their preferred candidate, while 41 percent said they plan on voting for the candidate they selected in the survey. Emerson notes that of respondents who watched the first Democratic debates, 25 percent chose Biden, while those who did not watch or follow the debates backed Biden by 39 percent.

A plurality of respondents said that Harris won the debate, but only 18 percent of those who watched or followed the debates preferred her, as did 11 percent of those who didn’t.

The Director of Emerson Polling, Spencer Kimball, said in a statement that “these numbers suggest that the Democratic field is still fluid and that Biden will need to improve upon his performance to maintain his lead.”

Emerson polled 481 registered Democrats from July 6-8, with a margin of error of  4.4 percentage points.
