Rep. Stefanik Rips WH Amid Claim It Granted Trump Raid

By    |   Tuesday, 11 April 2023 12:42 PM EDT

An investigation into the pretext of the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago revealed President Joe Biden's White House issued a "special access request" to the Justice Department, and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., is responding with indignation.

"Joe Biden's weaponization of the FBI against his political opponents is unAmerican and must be stopped immediately," Stefanik tweeted Tuesday morning, linking to America First Legal's (AFL's) Freedom of Information Act request of documents from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

Not only did the Biden White House issue the "special access request" to the Justice Department before an unprecedented raid of its political opposition, former President Donald Trump, but NARA might have also deliberately misled Congress.

America First Legal noted acting Archivist Debra Wall told Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, chair of the House Intelligence Committee, on Aug. 16 that NARA "had not been involved in the DOJ investigation or any searches that it has conducted."

"The evidence suggests that the ostensibly nonpartisan National Archives and Records Administration misled Congress about the Biden White House's responsibility for the FBI's raid of former President Trump's home," AFL's senior counselor and director of oversight and investigations, Reed Rubinstein, wrote in a statement. "The evidence further suggests that Biden officials in the Executive Office of the President and the Department of Justice unlawfully abused their power and then lied about it to the American people.

"This government, it seems, acknowledges no limits on its power to harass, intimidate, and silence its political opponents."

The "special access request" issued by the Biden White House used a statute that was intended to be used only when the records in question are needed for "the conduct of current business," according to AFL in a news release Monday night.

"Providing documents to the DOJ for purposes of a criminal investigation is not the 'current business' of the White House. Accordingly, America First Legal is demanding NARA turn over records related to the Biden White House's involvement in the politically motivated raid of President Trump's home."

Trump has blasted the relentless efforts to search for a crime to charge him with as not only a weaponization of justice, but a deep and concerted election meddling effort.

"The boxes hoax, where I did nothing wrong, but Biden did, is just another way for the democrats to cheat on elections through, in this case, election interference," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday. "I am covered by the Presidential Records Act and, unlike Biden who was not president, have the power to declassify. My people are being threatened and harassed by a thug prosecutor who was put in by Biden Trump haters.

"Our legal system is corrupt, and the Democrats are using it to rig the 2024 presidential election. Way up in polls!"
