Jurors in the corruption trial of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards are coming forward to say the government failed to prove its case,
USA Today reported.
Making the rounds of morning television talk shows, the jurors who deliberated nine days but failed to reach a verdict on five charges, basically said the evidence wasn’t there.
Edwards was tried on charges he used campaign contributions to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter and her subsequent pregnancy. The jury acquitted him on one of the charges.
Theresa Fuller, appearing on ABC's Good Morning America, said "the evidence wasn't there. It could have been more." LaDonna Foster, appearing on NBC’s Today show, said "the burden of proof wasn't there, the evidence."
USA Today also reported that it is unlikely the federal government will retry Edwards on the charges. The paper noted that while the Justice Department declined comment on a possible retrial, sources said such a move was unlikely.
