WikiLeaks cofounder Julian Assange tried to use the Ecuadorian embassy in London as a “center for spying”, Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno told The Guardian over the weekend.
Moreno rejected claims that he had revoked Assange’s political asylum after nearly seven years in retribution for WikiLeaks reportedly leaking documents damaging to his family's reputation, instead saying the reason was that Assange used the embassy to interfere in the affairs of other nations.
“Any attempt to destabilize is a reprehensible act for Ecuador, because we are a sovereign nation and respectful of the politics of each country,” Moreno told The Guardian.
Assange’s lawyer Jennifer Robinson told Britain’s Sky News that the Ecuadorian government was spreading alleged falsehoods to distract attention from its unlawful decision to revoke his asylum and allow his arrest at its British embassy.
Following his arrest, Assange is being held in London’s Belmarsh Prison awaiting sentencing in Great Britain for skipping bail to avoid being sent to Sweden as part of a probe into a rape allegation, according to CBS News.
In addition, the United States also is seeking his extradition after charging him with conspiring to break into a Pentagon computer system.
