Clint Eastwood Signs Brief to Support Same-Sex Marriage

By    |   Thursday, 28 Feb 2013 01:36 PM

Clint Eastwood has returned to the Hollywood fold — at least on one issue — following his foray into Republican politics at last year’s national convention.

The four-time Oscar-winner has signed a friend of the court brief to the Supreme Court supporting the right to same-sex marriage.

Eastwood joins more than 100 Republicans and conservatives who have now signed the amicus brief, which seeks to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which bars gay unions.

The brief will be officially released Thursday evening, according to Breitbart News.

Eastwood, who has had decades of working in Hollywood as both an actor and director, made a star appearance at the Republican National Convention last August when he spoke to a chair representing President Barack Obama.

Breitbart obtained a copy of the amicus brief. It reads in part: “Whether same-sex couples should have access to civil marriage divides thoughtful, concerned citizens. But this Court has long recognized that a belief, no matter how strongly or sincerely held, cannot justify a legal distinction that is unsupported by a factual basis, especially where something as important as civil marriage is concerned. . . .

“Our constitutional tradition requires the judiciary to protect our most cherished liberties against overreaching by the legislature or the electorate, and that principle, no less than our commitment to democratic self-government, is necessary to individual freedom and limited government.”
