Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican who is co-chair of Donald Trump's U.S. House Leadership Committee, spent some of his own campaign funds for personal use, The Daily Beast reports.

According to Federal Election Commission filings, Hunter paid $1,302 from his re-election campaign on videogame fees and $1,650 to Christian Unified Schools, a private school district in San Diego. The payments were made between September 21 and December 16, 2015.

It is illegal for a candidate to use campaign funds for personal use.

Hunter's chief of staff, Joey Kasper, told the Beast that the payments are "being resolved."

The videogame fees, Kasper said, were made by Hunter's 13-year-old son, also named Duncan. The son apparently used his father's campaign credit card to pay for games on a game platform, but according to the Beast, Kasper's explanation of how that happened changed several times.

Kasper initially said that the teen had either taken the card from his father's wallet without his knowledge, or had been told to charge the games on his personal card, but the teen grabbed the wrong card.

Kasper later said that only some initial charges to Steam Games were made by the son, and later charges were fraudulent, which is one of the reasons the card account was closed in December.

As for the money donated to the school district, Kasper said it was a donation from the campaign for the school's sports fund, and was not intended to be a payment for his son's tuition.

A call to the school by the Beast found that no such record of a donation could be found, which Kasper said was a misunderstanding on the school's part. The school has been directed to change the payment to a donation from the campaign, he said.
