In December, Roy Moore's wife defended the Republican senate candidate against charges of anti-semitism by claiming "one of our attorneys is a Jew," who has now been identified by Forward as a friend of Moore's Democratic opponent, Doug Jones.
Richard Jaffe, Birmingham-native and criminal defense attorney, previously represented Caleb Moore, the son of Roy and Kayla Moore, after he was arrested for drug possession in 2015. Jaffe is the former president of the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and has been named "Lawyer of the year" by Best lawyers of America multiple-times. He has also a close personal friend of senator-elect Doug Jones for over 30 years.
"There could not be a more passionate supporter of Doug than me!" Jaffe told the Washington Examiner.
Jaffe told AL.com in June, when Jones announced his candidacy, that while he and Jones "haven't always agreed on everything, but I can tell you from experience Doug is a consensus builder, who can bridge the gaps between people. That is exactly what Alabama needs – someone who is qualified but not a typical Washington insider. Doug knows how to get things done, and that's exactly what he would do as an advocate for the citizens of Alabama."
Although Caleb Moore, as the son of the former Alabama chief justice, made headlines with his arrest, he is not Jaffe's most famous client. That would be Eric Rudolph, also known as the Olympic Park Bomber.
In 1996, Rudolph, a white nationalist and vocal anti-semite, set off a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, killing two and injuring over 100. In 1998, he bombed abortion clinics and a lesbian nightclub, killing or injuring multiple people. Rudolph was a Holocaust denier who called TV "the electronic Jew," according to his sister.
During Rudolph's trial, Jaffe said, while he might "detest Eric Rudolph," he is "entitled to a good defense," though he did eventually withdraw from the case.
