The brother of the late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has announced his own bid for the office.
"I’m here to continue on Rob’s legacy,” Doug Ford, a former city council member, announced Friday night at his mother's home, CTV News reported.
"Rob is looking down from heaven with that big smile on his face as each and every one of you has seen many of times. I just have to say Robbie, this one is going to be for you."
Rob Ford, who gained global notoriety in 2013 for admitting that he smoked crack cocaine, died in March 2016 at the age of 46 after being diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of soft-tissue cancer.
According to CTV News, a poll conducted in June showed that current Toronto Mayor John Tory would beat Ford if the two squared off in a rematch of the 2014 mayoral election, which he entered after his brother had to withdraw amid his battle with cancer.
The next municipal election in Toronto is scheduled for Oct. 22, 2018.
