Doug Collins: Dems Pushed for Nixon Comparisons With Dean

House Democrats have no way to tie President Donald Trump to anything except "through innuendo" so they pushed for impeachment and comparisons to late President Richard Nixon through bringing in Watergate-era White House Counsel John Dean as a star witness, Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., said Tuesday.

"(It's like) watching late-night reruns on the cable channels," Rep. Collins told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "You know what they're gonna say, you laugh at the jokes before they ever get there."

Dean, who testified to the House Judiciary Committee to give background information on impeachment, famously testified against Nixon in the 1970s, and since then he has been trying to recreate his career by admitting his misdeeds and trying to say "'everything is worse than what I did,'" said Collins, a committee member.

But, by bringing him in, Democrats "wanted the word Nixon and impeachment there," to let their base "think they're actually doing something" when really, "they're just rehashing old times," Collins added.

He also said Democrats are pushing for impeachment because they cannot run against Trump's record in office, so they want to investigate and "take little bits and pieces," despite special counsel Robert Mueller's report.

"Our committee who can't even seem to get through a hearing yesterday without it looking like a total joke," he said. "How are they gonna actually investigate better than Muller?"

In addition, Mueller's report noted there was Russian interference in the election, Collins said, but the committee has not scheduled any hearings trying to fix that.

"All they want to do is go after the president to satisfy their rabid base," Collins said.
