The failure of President Donald Trump and other world leaders to strongly deal with the dual threats of nuclear war and climate change has pushed the world to 2 minutes to Doomsday — the closest it has been in 65 years, a pair of atomic scientists write in The Washington Post.

Theoretical physicists Lawrence Krauss, chair of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Board of Sponsors, and Robert Rosner, chair of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Science and Security Board, say the world is more dangerous and threatening today as it was in 1953 during the Cold War.

The symbolic "Doomsday Clock," created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, was set to 2½ minutes before midnight when Trump took office last year. Now, they say, it has been moved up by 30 seconds, sitting at 2 minutes until midnight.

"To call the world nuclear situation dire is to understate the danger," the authors wrote.

They cited the failure to freeze North Korea's nuclear threat, worsening relations between the United States and Russia, and conflict in the Middle East as some of the reasons they pushed the clock closer to midnight.

They also cite "the Trump administration's decision essentially to turn a blind eye to climate change" despite a worsening climate, including powerful Caribbean hurricanes and heat waves in the Caribbean and "extreme heat waves" in Europe, South America, and California.

"We hope this resetting of the clock will be interpreted exactly as it is meant: an urgent warning of global danger," Krauss and Rosner write. "The time for world leaders to address looming nuclear danger and the continuing march of climate change is long past. The time for the citizens of the world to demand such action is now. It is time to rewind the Doomsday Clock."
