President Donald Trump called media mogul Rupert Murdoch ahead of Disney’s billion-dollar purchase of Murdoch’s entertainment empire to ask if Fox News would be affected by the deal, according to a New York Times report.
Murdoch told the president the purchase would not.
Disney announced on Dec. 14 it had reached a deal to buy most of 21st Century Fox in an all-stock transaction valued at roughly $52.4 billion. The agreement is subject to the approval of antitrust regulators.
Murdoch founded 21st Century Fox in 2013, and some of the company’s assets include the Fox Entertainment Group, Fox television networks and Fox News Channel, among others.
Trump, an avid follower of Fox News, has touted the media outlet often while slamming other outlets, including “fake news” CNN and MSNBC.
The New York Times article, which focused on Murdoch’s cozy relationship with Trump, said the two speak regularly over the phone and that Murdoch has weekly conversations with Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner.
