One of Rob Porter’s ex-wives on Sunday pushed back against the White House and President Donald Trump, saying “the truth exists whether the president accepts it or not.”

Trump on Saturday tweeted that lives were being “shattered” by “a mere allegation” of abuse after two White House staff members resigned last week over reports of domestic abuse, including staff secretary Porter.

Trump responded to Porter’s resignation by telling reporters that he maintained his innocence, and even offered a measure of support for Porter by saying he had a “great career ahead of him.”

"The words 'mere allegation' and 'falsely accused' [are] meant to imply that I am a liar," Jennie Willoughby said in an essay published in Time Magazine. "That Colbie Holderness is a liar. That the work Rob was doing in the White House was of higher value than our mental, emotional or physical wellbeing. That his professional contributions are worth more than the truth. That abuse is something to be questioned and doubted."

Willoughby, 39, said Porter had a horrible temper, once dragging her out of the shower to yell at her. She filed a protective order against him in 2009, and called police in 2010 when Porter, she said, punched the glass on the door to their home.

Holderness, 37, told the Daily Mail Porter started abusing her after their marriage in 2000.

"At times, the way he would be physically violent with me was very odd," she said. "He would throw me down on the bed, put his full body weight on top of me, then grind a knee or elbow into my body, expressing rage."

On how Trump implied she was not to be believed, Willoughby said, “as if Trump is the model of kindness and forgiveness. As if he readily acknowledges his own shortcomings and shows empathy and concern for others. I forgive him. Thankfully, my strength and worth are not dependent on outside belief — the truth exists whether the president accepts it or not.”
