President Donald Trump has sent of letter of congratulations to Pope Francis, acknowledging the fifth anniversary of his election to the papacy.

"On behalf of the American people, I congratulate you on the fifth anniversary this March 13 of your election to the Chair of Saint Peter," Trump wrote to the pontiff on Tuesday in a letter made public by the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.

"As you enter the sixth year of your pontificate, please accept my best wishes for the continued success of your ministry."

The president also said: My family and I treasure the memory of our visit to the Vatican last May. I was honored to discuss with you many of the urgent global issues of shared concern to the United States and the Holy See."

"Our conversation underscored the enduring importance of moral leadership in the international community, and of our continued close cooperation as we work to advance peace and defend human freedom around the world."

Francis, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, replaced Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013 citing deteriorating strength due to old age.
