President Donald Trump on Saturday ripped the media for relegating to "fake" news his decision to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un "by the following morning" after South Korea made the announcement.

Trump took to Twitter:

Many news pundits have said Trump made the decision to meet Kim in haste and have cautioned that the president needed to undertake extensive preparation for such a high-stakes session.

But the White House has pushed back, with Sarah Huckabee Sanders telling reporters Friday that "this has been part of an ongoing campaign that's been going for over a year."

She added that South Korea said that Pyongyang agreed to denuclearize and halt its testing of nuclear missiles in leading up to the meeting.

"They have to follow through on the promises that they made," Sanders said. "We want to see concrete and verifiable action on that front."
