Following President Donald Trump's tweet on Sunday that Mexico will pay for a wall on the border with the United States, the Mexican government reiterated that it will not do so, CNN has reported.

The response was released in a statement from Mexico's Foreign Ministry, stating that Mexico would not pay for a wall or other physical barrier at the border "under any circumstances" and stressed that "this determination is not part of a Mexican negotiating strategy, but a principle of national sovereignty and dignity."

A central Trump campaign promise to build the wall and have Mexico pay for it has returned to the spotlight in recent days, after the president declared at a rally in Phoenix last week that he will shut down the government if Congress does not provide money to begin building the wall in a must-pass spending bill due by the end of September, according to Politico.

Trump has argued that he will get Mexico to pay back the money for building the wall, but that it is vital construction that can not wait.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry's statement also rejected Trump's comment regarding Mexico being one of the highest crime nations in the world, saying the issue is a "shared problem" for both countries and is caused in part by American demand for Mexican narcotics.

The ministry also rejected Trump's assertion that Canada and Mexico are both being "very difficult" in renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement. The statement said Mexico was "serious and constructive" in the talks and sought a winning result for all involved, but that in any case, it "will not negotiate NAFTA, nor any other aspect of the bilateral relationship through social media or the media."

Mexico added that it offered any help needed to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
