President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is looking forward to having another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as he pursues a deal to end the reclusive nation's nuclear weapons program.
Trump aired his thoughts regarding the matter on Twitter, first quoting a news broadcast and then adding his own line:
"'Kim Jong Un says North Korea will not make or test nuclear weapons, or give them to others — & he is ready to meet President Trump anytime.' PBS News Hour. I also look forward to meeting with Chairman Kim who realizes so well that North Korea possesses great economic potential!"
Kim gave a New Year's Day speech earlier Tuesday and said he is ready and willing to meet with Trump to further discuss denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. The two world leaders first met last June in Singapore.
Kim called on the United States and other nations to stop holding joint military drills with South Korea as the details of an agreement are worked out over the coming months.
"Now that North and South Korea decided on the path of peace and prosperity, we insist that joint military exercises with outside forces should no longer be allowed and deployment of war weapons such as outside strategic assets should be completely stopped," Kim said.
