Donald Trump Jr. told members of the House Intelligence Committee that he communicated with White House staffer Hope Hicks, not his father, while the Trump administration reacted to news reports that he met with a Russian at Trump Tower in June 2016.

CNN cited multiple sources who said Trump Jr. spoke with Hicks as she was aboard Air Force One with President Donald Trump. Hicks and Trump worked up a statement about the matter that was sent out via the Trump Organization carrying Trump Jr.'s name.

The 2016 meeting included Trump Jr., Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, a Russian lawyer named Natalia Veselnitskaya, and others.

Trump Jr. faced questioning in front of the House Intelligence Committee Wednesday as the panel investigates whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.

The existence of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting was first reported over the summer. The Washington Post reported in late July that Trump himself dictated the statement sent out on behalf of his son as he flew back to the United States from the G-20 Summit.

The meeting was set up on the premise of providing the Trump campaign with dirt on Hillary Clinton. Trump Jr. said it ended up being about Russian adoptions and the Magnitsky Act.
