President Donald Trump's eldest son claimed Thursday that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was "fired" because of revelations in a GOP-authored memo alleging FBI surveillance abuses.

McCabe announced Monday he would step down, but Donald Trump Jr. asserted in a pair of tweets that information in the memo from the House Intelligence Committee was "good enough" for the administration to "fire McCabe."

The White House at a press briefing Monday denied involvement in McCabe's decision to resign; the president has publicly needled McCabe since last December.

The president's son also incorrectly asserted "All of Congress has seen it, not just the special committees"; the Senate did not have access to the memo.

McCabe reportedly decided to step down early after a conversation with FBI Director Christopher Wray; he will remain as an employee of the FBI, but will immediately go on leave and then retire in mid-March, when he is eligible to receive his full pension benefits, The Hill reported.
