More than half of voters disapprove of the job President Donald Trump is doing on the economy, despite the highest positive rating of economic conditions ever surveyed by Quinnipiac University.

In its latest survey released Tuesday, Quinnipiac found that 63 percent of Americans say the economy is excellent or good, the highest rating since 2001.

However, 45 percent of voters give former president Barack Obama credit for the booming economy, compared to 43 percent for Trump.

The results, according to Quinnipiac:

  • 51 percent disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy.
  • 44 percent approve of Trump's handling of the economy.
  • 29 percent of Republicans give Obama credit for the good or excellent economy.

Trump's approval rating overall comes in at 37 percent, Quinnipiac reports.

The 44 percent approval on the economy is Trump's second-best work, according to the survey; he has a 45 percent approval for his fight against terrorism.

However, approval on foreign policy, immigration, healthcare and taxes range from range from 37 percent to 29 percent, according to Quinnipiac.

"A big bag of coal under the Mar-a-Lago tree from a voting public that has little confidence in the president," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

From Dec. 13 to 18, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,230 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points.
