President Donald Trump said in an interview airing Monday that he'd like to eliminate government spending caps in order to boost defense spending, complaining that he was "left a mess" by President Barack Obama's administration.

"The one thing we have to do is spend in defense," Trump told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo in an interview airing on the "Mornings With Maria" program. "I was left a mess, we can say in different ways, whether it was North Korea or the Middle east, where we have made more progress against ISIS in the last nine months, than in the last eight years, as you know."

The Middle East, he continued, is now "a whole different ballgame right now as far as ISIS is concerned," but still, "there is a lot of hatred in this world," and the United States needs a "strong military, stronger than ever before."

And, he added, he does "want to get rid of the caps at least in some point."

Trump also said work is coming on welfare reform, "whether people like it or not."

"[People are] having somebody nearby, where they are living better than the person with the three jobs," he told Bartiromo. " It's not fair. It's can be out there very soon. We're doing a big infrastructure bill. I could tie it together."

Trump also said he believes the economic growth in the United States "can be tremendous," but the trade deals that the nation as are now "so bad, the money you're talking about is peanuts compared to the trade deals."

The United States loses hundreds of billions of dollars a year, and has "massive deficits" with nearly every country, but "that's going to change."

Trump also commented about his use of social media, and denied critics' complaints that his Twitter messages could be getting in the way of his agenda and overall message.

"I doubt I would be here if it weren't for social media," Trump said. "I get treated very unfairly by the media. I have a tremendous platform . . . when someone says something about me I'm able to go 'bang bang bang' and I take care of it."
