President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he is “surprised at how badly” negotiations have gone between the United Kingdom and the European Union over Brexit, BBC News reports.

Trump made the remark during a news conference in the Oval Office with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar during the prime minister’s annual trip to the White House and Capitol Hill. Trump said that Brexit is “tearing countries apart.

"I'm surprised at how badly it has all gone from a stand point of negotiations but I gave the prime minister my ideas of how to negotiate it, she didn't listen to that and that's fine but it could have been negotiated in a different manner," he added.

“I hate to see everything being ripped apart right now,” Trump said, according to Politico. “I don't think another vote would be possible because it would be very unfair to the people who won, who say, ‘What do you mean you’re going to take another vote?’ That will be tough.”
Varadkar said that Trump and he each have “a different opinion” of the decision to leave the EU, and said, “I regret that Brexit’s happening.”
