GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump had his highest showing yet in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, with Ben Carson running close behind him.

  • Donald Trump: 25 percent
  • Ben Carson: 22 percent
  • Marco Rubio: 13 percent
  • Ted Cruz: 9 percent
  • Jeb Bush: 8 percent
  • Carly Fiorina: 7 percent
  • Mike Huckabee: 3 percent
  • John Kasich: 3 percent
  • Rand Paul: 2 percent
  • Chris Christie: 1 percent
  • Lindsey Graham: less than 1 percent
  • Rick Santorum: less than 1 percent
  • George Pataki: less than 1 percent
  • Bobby Jindal: less than 1 percent
  • Jim Gilmore: less than 1 percent

Trump's support among Republican voters is up from 21 percent a month ago in the same poll. Carson's grew his support from 20 percent in September, while Fiorina has dropped from 11 percent last month.

Carson leads among voters who say they can see themselves supporting him.

  • Carson: 74 percent (20 percent could not see themselves supporting him)
  • Trump: 59 percent (36 percent)
  • Rubio: 65 percent (26 percent)
  • Fiorina: 56 percent (30 percent)
  • Bush: 51 percent (44 percent)
  • Cruz: 48 percent (41 percent)

Carson also has the largest number of people who consider him their second choice. When both first and second choices are combined, Carson beats Trump 44 percent to 39 percent.

Carson leads among conservative Republicans, whereas Trump leads among those who are moderate to liberal, people who listen to talk radio and Tea Party supporters.

The poll was conducted October 15 to 18 among 400 Republican primary voters. It has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percent.
