The FBI has ruled out "tainted alcohol" as the cause of death for two American tourists who died in the Dominican Republic this May, The Hill reports.

The American tourists, 63-year-old Nathaniel Holmes and 49-year-old Cynthia Day, both died in the same room at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana Resort in San Pedro de Macoris just days after a third person died in that hotel. Local authorities denied that the alcohol some of the victims drank contributed to their deaths, instead connecting them to respiratory failure, hemorrhaging, and an enlarged heart. On Monday, the State Department backed up these claims.

"Toxicology test results to date have been provided by the FBI to Dominican authorities, and family members of the deceased have been informed," a State spokesperson said in a statement to the Hill. "The results of the additional, extensive toxicology testing completed to date have been consistent with the findings of local authorities. Our condolences and sympathy go out to the families during this difficult time. Methanol poisoning from tainted alcohol was ruled out by the FBI in these cases during the toxicology screening, and it was not the finding in any other cases of U.S. citizen deaths investigated by Dominican authorities."

A lawyer for the couple’s family told the Hill that unanswered questions still remain.

"You had a couple that died of the same ailment at the same time, and they want to say that it's natural causes," attorney Steven Bullock said. "I think there's something for us to continue to look into."

He added, "The only information that has been received by the families is what is being reported in the media. Our investigation is continuing, and we will not have any further comment until we receive the results of our investigation."
