WashPost: DOJ Warns WH Against Memo's Release

Top Department of Justice officials warned the White House against the release of the GOP memo from the House Intelligence Committee which alleges FBI's abuses of FISA warrants to surveil the Trump campaign, according to a report in The Washington Post.

The "last-ditch plea" was made by FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein – although Rosenstein did most of the talking – to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, the Post reported, citing sources briefed on the meeting.

The meeting came before the Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines to request the White House release the four-page memo headed by committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunez, R-Calif., according to the report.

Rosenstein, supervising FBI special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, reportedly claimed the DOJ "was not convinced the memo accurately describes its investigative practices" and releasing the memo "could set a dangerous precedent," according to a Post source.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who recused himself from the Russia probe, was not a part of the meeting.

The memo is reportedly currently being vetted by the Department of Justice, the FBI, National Security Agency, and the Director of National Intelligence before submitting a recommendation on the memo's release to the National Security Council and the White House.

President Trump will take "at least several days" to make his decision on whether or not to release the memo, a senior White House official told the Post.
