A group of doctors, who opposed Donald Trump's candidacy, has written an open letter to the president-elect asking him not to harm the nation's health care system.

"We saw in your presidential campaign a threat to the health and well-being of the country," says the letter published on Stat.

The letter, authored by Aaron Stupple, a Boston MD; Andrew Goldstein, a primary care physician in New York City, and Stephen Martin an MD in Massachusetts, comes after an earlier letter warning Trump was a "health threat" was signed by 600 physicians during the campaign

"First, we ask that you do no harm," the three doctors said in the new letter. "Second, we respect that your campaign ran on changing a system that you and your supporters said was corrupt and that neglected million. In many ways we agree."

The doctors urged Trump to do the following:

  • Improve primary care —They noted forgotten Americans struggled with a system that can be hard to get into and that large segments of the population missed out. "This help should take place close to their homes through stronger primary care," the doctors said.
  • Invest in public health — The doctors called on Trump to help combat the "absence of sound public health policies in the rise of opioid deaths." And they said there should more focus on improving nutrition, disease surveillance and fighting stress and obesity.
  • Provide affordable health insurance — The doctors agreed Obamacare has it flaws, but noted ending it abruptly would be a damaging move. "We recommend focusing on the (program's) biggest weaknesses and addressing premium increases."
  • Negotiate drug prices — Obamacare allows the pharmaceutical lobby to set the terms for drug pricing without giving the government any power to negotiate, the doctors noted. "Please use your negotiating skills to stop this burden to our seniors."
  • Protect our veterans — The three physicians said veterans deserve better care for mental health, addiction and chronic diseases.
  • Aim for quality care — "We ask you to use your business savvy to help patients get the quality care that they pay for, nothing more and nothing less," they wrote.

And they ended the letter saying the nation's health care system is in need of improvement.

"We applaud you for shining a light on the million for whom it has failed. In working for them, and for all Americans, we urge you to be thoughtful."
