The Democratic National Committee has filed a lawsuit challenging a New Hampshire election law, claiming it will disenfranchise voters, Politico has reported.
Last year, New Hampshire passed a law requiring that anyone who registers and votes on Election Day without photo identification must submit a valid photo ID to the state within seven days. If they fail to do so, their vote will not be counted and they will be referred to the office of the state Attorney General.
Politico notes that President Joe Biden’s campaign is supporting the suit, with Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez expressing concern that the law could affect turnout in key demographics during the upcoming 2024 election, including among college students and low-income voters.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris believe that we should be making it easier, not harder, for every eligible American voter to participate in our democracy. New Hampshire’s law flies in the face of that belief, and is a chilling and unacceptable embrace of the election fraud hysteria championed by Donald Trump,” Rodriguez said. “In an election that could very well determine the fate of our democracy, it is our imperative to fight for the right to vote. This is just the beginning.”
The DNC action follows the dismissal of a combined lawsuit from several other groups challenging the law, including the New Hampshire chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and multiple other interest groups in the state.
