Dinesh D'Souza's New Film Trailer Unveiled

By    |   Friday, 07 Mar 2014 03:28 PM

Conservative commentator and Barack Obama critic Dinesh D'Souza unveiled the trailer for his new movie "America" and screened it on Friday for attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference in suburban Washington.

"America" envisions that the American colonists lost the Revolutionary War, and asks: "What would the world look like if America did not exist?"

The trailer was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter and posted on its website. It begins with clips of famous Americans including Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, Neil Armstrong, and others.

It then moves to a battle scene in which George Washington is struck by a bullet. As he dies, American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore disintegrate.

At CPAC two years ago, D'Souza unveiled a trailer for his first movie, "2016: Obama's America," a critical look at President Obama that earned $33 million at the domestic box office and became the second-most popular political documentary behind only Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Regarding "America," D'Souza — a former policy adviser to President Reagan — told The Hollywood Reporter: "Even though we made a mainstream movie that is for all Americans, we know that it will especially resonate with our conservative friends."

D'Souza is currently out on $500,000 bond after being charged with arranging excessive campaign contributions to a U.S. Senate candidate.

According to an indictment made public on Jan. 23, D'Souza reimbursed people he had directed to contribute a total of $20,000 to the candidate's 2012 campaign.

D'Souza's supporters claim the federal charges are politically motivated and a possible payback for his "2016" movie.

Famed law professor Alan Dershowitz called the indictment "an outrageous prosecution," adding that "this is clearly a case of selective prosecution for one of the most common things done during elections."

"America" is set to open on July 4. It was produced by Gerald Molen, who won a best picture Oscar for "Schindler's List," and also produced "2016."

D'Souza's trial is scheduled to begin on May 19 in New York.
