Morris: GOP Must Hold Leads in 10 Races to Take Congress

Veteran political analyst and best-selling author Dick Morris tells Newsmax that all Republicans need to do is hold on to leads they have in 10 races, and they will take control of the Senate in November.

Morris also says the tea party movement is “animating” voters to come out and vote in the midterms. And Republican Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell could be a “come-from-behind” winner in Delaware, Morris said during an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV on Wednesday.

Morris made the comments during a visit to the West Palm Beach, Fla., headquarters of Newsmax Media to participate in the company’s upcoming “Make America Great Again” campaign and webcast.

The exclusive webcast, which features former GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, kicks off Oct. 12 and will last until Election Day. Palin, the former Alaska governor and best-selling author who also is a Fox News commentator, is participating at the request of Newsmax founder and CEO Christopher Ruddy. The series is intended to help restore the values and principles that made the country a world leader.

Regarding the midterm elections, Morris says that, based on new polls showing big gains for Republicans in November, he believes the GOP can take control of Congress.

“Today, October 6, 2010, is the first day all year that Republicans have led in 10 Democratic-held Senate seats — enough to win control,” Morris says.

“And most of those are by significant margins. In North Dakota, we’re 43 [percentage points] ahead. Indiana, we’re 18 ahead. Arkansas, 18 ahead. Wisconsin, 12 ahead. Incredible. Pennsylvania, seven. Colorado, five. West Virginia, five, which is astonishing. We were seven or eight behind, now we’re five ahead. Illinois, four. [Mark] Kirk is really opening up daylight between him and [Alexi] Giannoulias.

“In Nevada, which had been tied for seven weeks, Sharron Angle has now moved to a 3-point lead over Harry Reid. And in Washington State, where Patty Murray has been leading for the last four weeks, Dino Rossi, the Republican, now has a 1-point lead.

“The interesting thing is these are all moving in a pro-Republican direction.

“At this point, if the leading candidates hold on to their leads, we will capture the House and the Senate.”

A recent Gallup poll shows Republicans with a slender 3-point lead in generic party balloting.

“But among people who say they are likely to vote, which is about 60 or 70 percent — half of whom are lying — the Republicans have an 11-point edge,” Morris says.

“But when you get down to the people who will actually vote, Republicans have an 18-point edge.

“The meaning of that is we really need to get busy and make sure our vote shows up. To that end, I’ve worked with Citizens United on a new movie, and I’m very enthusiastic about it. It’s an amazing movie. I’m in it, [Newt] Gingrich is in it, Ann Coulter and Fred Barnes. It’s ‘Battle for America,’” at www.battleforamericamovie.com.

The movie describes how crucial the stakes are in the coming election.

“Wherever two or more of you are gathered, show that movie,” Morris urges, “because that’s what we need to do, bring in this turnout.”

Asked about concerns that Republicans may not be able to match the Democrats’ get-out-the-vote strategies, Morris says: “Match them? They’ll exceed them five times over.

“The tea party has everybody at a fever pitch. It’s unbelievable the way that’s animating people.”

As for media reports that the GOP peaked too soon, Morris tells Newsmax: “Totally untrue. Look at the stats in the Senate races. This is just the mainstream media trying to influence the results.”

In the Delaware Senate race, one poll showed Democrat Chris Coons leading Christine O’Donnell by 19 points.

But Morris points out: “The poll was taken on September 21, and now it’s October 6, so we have two weeks in which the media has not polled that race.

“O’Donnell came into a firestorm of criticism from Bill Maher and late-night TV. Now there’s been a lot of focus on issue differences, about stimulus and Obamacare and all that stuff. So I would expect O’Donnell to close that race, and I think she could be a sleeper, a come-from-behind candidate.”

In the Washington Senate race, Republican Dino Rossi has taken the lead, Morris observes.

“Dino Rossi was doing positives when [Democrat Patty] Murray was coming after him. Now Rossi is answering Murray’s charges and moving ahead.

“The lesson for Republicans around the country is, answer. When the Democrat says you’re a horse thief, show that you’re allergic to horses. The Democrats have nothing but personal negatives, and when you answer like Rossi’s doing, you can move ahead.”

Asked whether Sharron Angle can unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada, Morris declares: “I sure do.

“Now for the first time she’s actually showing a lead. So she’s going to win.

“The one piece of bad news throughout the country is California. [Sen. Barbara] Boxer has gone from a 2- or 3-point lead to a 4- or 5-point lead. She is still is under 50 percent and can still be defeated. But [Republican challenger Carly] Fiorina really needs to get her act together.”

Referring to Donald Trump’s statement that he is seriously considering a run for president, Morris says: “Well, I do look forward to him telling Barack Obama, ‘You’re fired.’ But I don’t think he’s really going to run.”
