Former Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., says newly elected Democrats from moderate House districts are getting short-changed because of the focus on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

Gephardt made his comments during an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and blamed the media and Republicans for all the attention Ocasio-Cortez is receiving.

"I am thinking that probably the attention she is getting is a convenient partnership between the media, who kind of likes celebrities, and the Republicans, who want a target," Gephardt, who had served as Democratic House leader, told the paper. "[Democrats] had a lot of people elected the last election who were from moderate districts. In fact, a lot of them were women, and many of them were former military.

"You don't hear much from them; they don't get any attention. I've got to tell you, I am disappointed in the media in not giving the other people the attention they deserve. They are there, too. They have an equal vote to hers, and to everybody else, and they have got different views. But they never get any ink."

Ocasio-Cortez has built up a strong following since being elected to Congress. As of Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez had 3.4 million followers on Twitter.
