Personnel in the Department of Homeland Security lost 228 firearms, 1,889 badges, and 25 secure immigration stamps over the course of three years, according to an audit by the DHS' Office of the Inspector General.

The new audit reported that DHS personnel did not always safeguard sensitive items and if they failed to do so, they were not held accountable.

In an analysis of 115 case files, auditors reported 65 instances where badges, firearms, and stamps did not receive proper protection, the report said.

"More than half of the lost items we reviewed (65 of 115) revealed that component personnel did not follow policy or used poor judgment when safeguarding these assets," the report said.

"In these cases, components did not always hold personnel accountable nor did they receive remedial training for failing to safeguard these sensitive assets," the report added.

"Without oversight and policy improvements, highly sensitive assets will continue to be subject to loss or theft and the safety of the general public will be at risk," the audit stated.

Those amounts show a slight improvement from the last audit in 2010, when DHS personnel lost 289 handguns, rifles, and shotguns over three years, according to the audit released Tuesday.

Items typically were lost or stolen out of vehicles, residences, or public areas, the audit report said.

Recommendations in the report included retraining employees who handle property inventory records, and standardizing badges for law enforcement and non-law enforcement personnel.

The Department of Homeland Security set a target date of June 30, 2018 to implement the recommendations, the report said.

In April, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms released a report for 2016 that said 9,281 firearms were lost by or stolen from those who have federal firearm licenses.
