Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., has again lost the support of his hometown newspaper, the Fresno Bee, over his “ongoing defense of President [Donald] Trump to the detriment of the 22nd District.”
The Bee, which endorsed Nunes in his every campaign from his first election in 2002 up until 2018, announced Monday that the congressman is “unworthy” of recommendation. The newspaper’s editors write that Nunes “became obsessed with defending” Trump against the investigation led by former special counsel Robert Mueller, “to the point of violating well-established protocol while running the powerful House Intelligence Committee.”
Nunes was forced to apologize in 2017 after he went public with allegations that the Trump transition team’s messages were intercepted by American intelligence agencies without first informing the other members of the committee.
The editors add: “Nunes would rather appear on Fox News shows than ensure people in Tulare and Fresno counties have clean water, affordable health insurance, and job prospects.”
They conclude, “Nunes has proven time and again that supporting the president is his priority, so it is mystifying that he doesn’t just go to work for the Trump team. Keeping Nunes in the House is probably more useful to the overall Republican strategy. His constituents are the collateral damage in that equation.
“If the voters in the 22nd District want a representative who will focus on good governance for them, versus winning political battles, then The Bee recommends voters support Phil Arballo,” a Democrat, Fresno native, and the owner of a financial services business whose grandparents immigrated from Mexico.
