A decision is likely by the end of the week about whether to suspend Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel following a "troubling" report about the deadly school shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday.

"In Florida, the governor has the ability to suspend government officials for incompetence," DeSantis, who was sworn in on Tuesday, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

"We just had last week a comprehensive report from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Commission. It was really troubling to read some of the things that could have been done to prevent one of the most awful tragedies we've had."

According to Fox News, Israel has been telling members of his staff he will be suspended from his job.

The state-commissioned report made a number of school safety recommendations, including arming teachers.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who chaired the commission, outlined in his 458-page report the errors that were made during the mass shooting at the Parkland, Florida high school, including failed safety and security policies.

Gualtieri strongly backed the proposal to arm teachers, saying that "anyone who thinks they're going to get rid of guns is crazy...we've got to do something differently and people should be able to protect themselves."

Israel, in a letter to the commission, said he's made several changes in his department, including having deputies complete an additional eight hours of active-shooter training.

The sheriff's office also created a Threat Assessment Unit, headed by a former New York Police Department inspector, along with an internal committee to address the commission's findings.
