Democrats wanting to push for President Donald Trump's impeachment won't go far with claims made in connection with the payment of hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels or anyone, as making such payments would not have been against the law, attorney Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV Monday.
"The president has the authority, as a candidate for president of the United States, to contribute as much money as he wants from his own pocket to whatever cause he wanted," Dershowitz told "Newsmax Now" host John Bachman. "He would have the authority to give a billion dollars to a woman to hush her up. There's no crime in doing that. The only crime is paying money to a witness in front of a grand jury or a witness for the prosecution."
He admitted that it "may not be pleasant" to pay a hush fee, but "that's called a settlement. It's done all the time...but it's not illegal. I don't think we're going to see the Democrats go anywhere."
Meanwhile, Dershowitz said he thinks both parties have misused the powers of Congress for investigation for partisan advantage.
"I don't think the courts have been one for subpoenas if the courts feel that there is an improper purpose," said Dershowitz.
He also commented on the Israeli election, noting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a longtime friend of his but noted said he's not liked by everybody in Israel.
There actually be two elections, said Dershowitz; one to determine how many seats each party gets, and then another for Netanyahu to put together a coalition.
"I don't see that he has a better chance now," said Dershowitz. "We may see another election without a government being formed then, and it's going to be really questionable what the president of Israel does because he has ultimate authority to decide who to give the mandate to see if they can form a coalition."
