North Korea's Kim Jong Un is a "crafty character" who relishes being legitimized worldwide by summits with leaders like President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin, but the United States needs patience on their end and results on Kim's, according to a former UN Ambassador Bill Richardson.

"[President Trump] should be patient – he's sometimes very impatient, and he likes the big summits with a lot of press," former Gov. Richardson, D-N.M., told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y., echoing former President Barack Obama's "strategic patience" position. "[Trump] should just let his people get the North Koreans to make some concessions to get another summit.

"Because that's big for Kim Jong Un: Having summits with the president of the United States."

Kim is now playing that big summit card by meeting with Putin, Richardson told host John Catsimatidis.

"North Korea is pushing for another summit with President Trump," Richardson said. "He's trying to get a new ally, Russia, to send a message to China and the United States that he's got a new friends that might help him.

"I think Kim Jong Un has been hurt a bit by the fact that the last summit failed, and sanctions weren't released on North Korea by the United States. So, what he's doing is maneuvering, getting some leverage, shooting a missile, although a short-range missile, to say, 'Hey, I'm still around, and I'm not satisfied with the way things are going.'

"That's what he's doing, John. He's a crafty character."

Putin's meeting with Kim also gives him authority as President Trump pushes hard for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, trying to progress beyond a stagnant "strategic patience" policy Trump has claimed further's North Korea's pursuit of becoming a worldwide nuclear power.

"What Putin wants is, 'OK, I'm also a player in any negotiation with North Korea,'" Richardson said. "Putin is important, Russia, because they are members of the UN Security Council that enforces sanctions on North Korea. And they can veto anything."

Richardson said a deal with Kim's North Korea is "possible," but he fears they might never get to the table.

"What I worry about is we're not going to get to the negotiating table and both sides seek a compromise, some sanctions relief, but the North Koreans take concrete steps to get rid of some of their weapons and some of their missiles, but with verification," Richardson said. "That's a good compromise in between that I think is possible."
