Polls: Dems Losing Appeal for Women

Democrats are losing their appeal for women – and global unrest might be part of the reason, recent polls show.

In a New York Times/CBS News poll, and a Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey, a shift in the traditional edge Democrats have over Republicans among women was noted.

In the Times/CBS News poll, for example, when asked "If the 2014 election for United States House of Representatives seats were being held today, would you vote for the Republican candidate or the Democratic candidate in your district?," women picked Democrats over Republicans by just one point, 43 percent to 42 percent.

And in the Journal/NBC News survey, asked if they wanted the midterm elections to produce a Democrat- or GOP-led Congress, 47 percent of women chose Democrats while 40 percent preferred a Republican majority; a month earlier, women favored a Democratic Congress 51-37 percent.

"Perhaps what we are seeing here is the awakening of the under-appreciated 'Wal-Mart mom' Jacksonians," American Thinker reports, noting many Americans favor use of force abroad to protect U.S. interests.

"But when things seem to be going reasonably well, their Jacksonianism lies dormant, and they can appear to be non-interventionists. It is only when threats pile up and the world begins to seem less safe that Americans reveal their true foreign policy colors."

"Wal-Mart mom" is a reference is to mothers of children under 18 who shop at the big discount retailer.

"Though Obama’s "war on women" rhetoric has served him well to date, it may be losing its pull among women now concerned about, well, actual wars," American Thinker reports.

One Democratic pollster said as much to the Journal after its survey found the shrinking appeal of the party with women voters.

"The results among women in this poll should be a cautionary tale for Democrats," Jeff Horwitt told the Journal, noting the findings point to a situation akin to prior to the 2010 midterm elections that brought in a Republican wave of lawmakers.
