Democratic presidential candidates trying to “out-left” each other during their fight for the party’s nomination will only lead to a victory for President Donald Trump in 2020, conservative CNN host S.E. Cupp said on Sunday.
Speaking on her "S.E. Cupp Unfiltered" show, Cupp said that Democrats trying to “prove their progressive bona fidies” is not a “good look” to attract middle Americans in the general campaign, citing a recently edited soundbite released by a far-left group ambushing Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein about the Green New Deal and making her look like a smug villain.
“If I’m Donald Trump, I’m feeling pretty good about my chances,” Cupp said. “As long as the media keeps zeroing in on these dumb plotlines and as long as Democrats spend the next year talking about the things most Americans don’t prioritize, and as long as candidates sound more like they’re running for president in 1950 Russia instead of 2019 America, Trump’s got this one in the bag."
Cupp said that “Instead of playing right into Trump’s hands, Democrats have to seriously sort out their messaging.”
The party should ask itself if they are “running for an audience of one… or are they running for all of America. Are they going kill each other in the progressive primary only to set up a general election can't-win situation?” she said.
Cupp also said that it is crucial for Democrats that former Vice President Joe Biden enter the race, because “If he's in, there's a clear distinction both in tone and substance between the far-left candidates and a more moderate one.”
