More than 2,100 people had filed the necessary paperwork to run for Congress as of Dec. 31. 2017, the most at this stage of the election period since the Federal Elections Commission started keeping records in 1977, according to The Washington Post.

Democrats lead the way, with 1,218 candidates filing paperwork compared to 807 Republicans and 146 others. Most Democrats – 1,133 – are running for House seats. The Senate will be a tougher race as only 33 of 100 seats will be up for grabs in the regular election compared to all 435 seats in the House.

Republicans hold the majority in both chambers, 238-193 in the House and 51-47 in the Senate, but Democrats stand a real chance at winning a House majority according to several projections and need to flip just 24 GOP-held seats in order to retake control.

More women than ever are on track to run for Congress, with 431 running or likely to run in the House, and 50 running or likely to run in the Senate. And, most of them are Democrats.

The reason so many are running?

"I've often thought that if you were an organizer out there trying to organize what is called the resistance or the women organizing the women who are thinking about running," said Deborah Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

"Donald Trump is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of motivation to stay engaged and stay involved and not lose your enthusiasm."
